Ebola Outbreak in DRC and Uganda Reaches 676 Confirmed Cases Amid International Response

As of June 12, 2026, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has resulted in 676 confirmed cases and 136 deaths, with the Ituri province most severely affected.
Outbreak Status and Scale
As of 12 June 2026, the Ebola disease outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus is affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The DRC Ministry of Health published updated figures reported a total of 676 confirmed cases, including 136 confirmed related deaths, and 262 individuals hospitalised in isolation (as of 10 June).
Geographic Distribution and Recent Cases
Ituri is the most affected province, with 629 confirmed cases from 19 health zones. In North Kivu, 44 confirmed cases have been reported from nine health zones and in South Kivu, three cases from one health zone. Included in this report are 41 new confirmed cases and nine new deaths since the last update on 11 June.
Virus Characteristics and Treatment Challenges
This outbreak is particularly severe due to the virus involved (Bundibugyo), the very few medical tools available to fight it, and the highly challenging environment in which it is spreading. There is no approved vaccine or treatment for this virus. This absence of specific therapeutics significantly complicates response efforts.
International Response Efforts
Hundreds of MSF staff are on the ground in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces in DR Congo and in Kampala, Bwera, and Arua in Uganda. MSF are running Ebola treatment centers, supporting treatment capacity, and delivering essential supplies like PPE. Multiple international organizations are coordinating support to strengthen outbreak containment.
Epidemiological Concern
Since the previous update, three new affected health zones have been reported: one in Ituri and two in North Kivu. Geographic expansion underscores the urgent need for rapid case identification and isolation to prevent further spread across the region.
