Trump and Iran Sign 60-Day Ceasefire Agreement in Historic Deal

Trump and Iran Sign 60-Day Ceasefire Agreement in Historic Deal

President Trump signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian on June 18, extending a ceasefire for 60 days and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The deal includes Iran reaffirming it won't develop nuclear weapons and sets the stage for further peace negotiations.

Historic Signing in France

US President Donald Trump and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian have electronically signed a memorandum of understanding to extend a ceasefire in the US-Iran war. Trump signed the deal in Versailles on Wednesday, at the G7 summit in France, rather than at a ceremony in Switzerland on Friday as originally scheduled. Pakistan, which has been mediating the peace process, said the "Islamabad MOU" had gone into effect as of Wednesday.

Key Terms of the Agreement

US officials said the agreement includes Iran reaffirming a commitment to not develop a nuclear weapon, an end to the war on all fronts and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries agreed to a memorandum of understanding to extend their ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and launch longer-term nuclear talks over the next 60 days. The agreement includes a ceasefire in Lebanon, a $300B reconstruction fund, and the lifting of sanctions.

Context and Importance

The war began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, though a temporary ceasefire suspended much of the most intense fighting on April 8. The United States provided details of the 14-point memorandum of understanding it reached with Iran on Wednesday, though neither has released a physical copy. Lebanon has been a key sticking point during negotiations, with Iran's Parliament Speaker stating that a ceasefire by Israel in Lebanon was non-negotiable for Tehran, and Iran has not wavered from this red line.

Road Ahead

The memorandum is not a final agreement like the JCPOA, which numbered hundreds of pages and was packed with technical details, but rather merely a roadmap for further negotiations. Crude prices in June fell to their lowest levels in over three months on news of an extended ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
