Stock Market Hits Fresh Records as Oil Prices Decline and Inflation Data Stabilizes

The S&P 500 reached all-time intraday highs and the Russell 2000 hit record levels as traders digested favorable inflation data and oil prices fell from recent highs.

Record-Breaking Market Rally

The S&P 500 rose to a fresh all-time intraday high on Thursday as oil prices declined and traders digested more inflation data. The Russell 2000, which focuses on small-cap stocks, just hit a record-breaking high of 3,067 on Thursday. It's up over 23% year to date and up over 2% in the last month. The broad market strength reflects investor optimism despite earlier volatility linked to geopolitical tensions.

Inflation Data Provides Some Relief

Headline July Producer Price Index data hit was flat, while core PPI rose 0.2%, below expectations. "Thursday's PPI alone doesn't change the calculus of the Federal Reserve, as the key to taming the inflation picture right now is a resolution in the Middle East or the establishment of pipelines to rely less on the Strait of Hormuz and the Fed has no influence on that," the chief investment officer said.

Fed Rate Outlook Unchanged

"For now, the Fed is likely to keep rates steady through year-end," according to market observers. Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Beth Hammack on Thursday doubled down on her view that the central bank should raise rates immediately to bring down inflation. The dissenting voices within the Fed underscore ongoing internal debate over the appropriate policy path.

Coffee Outpaces Tech Commodities

In a notable economic trend, Coffee futures are up 13% over the past three months, beating the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) — one of the big beneficiaries of AI — which is up just 2.2% through Wednesday's close. This shift reflects changing market dynamics and commodity pressures.
