Anthropic Files Confidentially for IPO, Edging Ahead of OpenAI in Race to Public Markets

Anthropic, maker of the Claude AI assistant, has confidentially filed for an initial public offering on June 1, 2026, potentially setting up a trillion-dollar debut. The move comes after the company raised $65 billion in Series H funding, pushing its valuation to $965 billion and surpassing rival OpenAI, triggering a high-stakes race among AI giants to reach Wall Street.

IPO Filing Details

Anthropic, the AI lab behind Claude, filed confidentially for an initial public offering on Monday, submitting a draft registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed IPO. Anthropic has yet to list the number of shares or set the price, and the proposed initial public offering will depend on market conditions and other factors.

Valuation and Market Position

The filing comes less than a week after Anthropic raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round that pushed its valuation to $965 billion, with the round co-led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, and D1 Capital Partners. The AI company's valuation of $965 billion surpasses rival OpenAI. Revenue run-rate hit about $47 billion in May 2026, up from roughly $10 billion the prior year, which gave bankers confidence to anchor the deal near a $1 trillion debut valuation.

Strategic Significance

If Anthropic debuts at a $1 trillion value, it would immediately catapult it into the ranks of the most highly valued companies in the world and likely mark the second- or third-largest IPO ever, behind SpaceX and Saudi Aramco. Many analysts believe whichever company makes it to the markets first will perform better in the funding race, because both Anthropic and OpenAI will be seeking tens of billions of dollars in new capital in short succession.

Business Performance

Anthropic's Claude Code tool became an early favorite among software developers after its release last year, and fintech firm Ramp reported that more businesses used Anthropic than OpenAI for the first time in May. The filing comes at a time when Anthropic's valuation has surpassed OpenAI, which in March was worth $852 billion after a recent funding round.
