Wearable Ultrasound Patch Successfully Boosts REM Sleep Without Drugs or Surgery

Researchers led by the University of Texas at Austin have created a soft wearable patch that improved REM sleep in real-world testing without medication or surgery, with the device combining gentle ultrasound stimulation with electrodes that track brain activity. This breakthrough represents the first noninvasive method to target deep brain regions involved in REM sleep while monitoring neural activity simultaneously.

Clinical Trial Results

In a study of 28 participants, the device shortened the time to REM by 43 minutes and extended it by about 16 minutes, with researchers also observing signs of improved stress regulation and changes in brain circuits tied to emotion. The benefits were observed across different participant groups, including both healthy sleepers and those with mild sleep difficulties.

Why REM Sleep Matters

REM (rapid eye movement) sleep plays a critical role in emotional regulation, memory consolidation, and mental health. Disruptions to REM sleep have been linked to depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. By enhancing REM sleep, NEUSLeeP could potentially help address these mental health conditions and improve overall sleep quality.

Safety and Next Steps

The benefits were observed in both healthy sleepers and participants experiencing some sleep difficulties, with users describing the patch as comfortable and safe and the study reporting minimal adverse effects. The researchers are working with UT's commercialization unit to bring the product to market and have filed a patent application for the technology.
