Stock Markets Reach All-Time Highs as Tech Earnings Surge, Oil Prices Fall

U.S. stock indexes hit record highs on August 4-5 as strong corporate earnings—especially in AI-related tech—boosted investor confidence. Oil price declines fueled hopes of a U.S.-Iran deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz, reducing geopolitical risk.
Markets Set New Records
The S&P 500 rose to a new all-time intraday record on Wednesday, building on its big rally in recent days, as traders pored through the latest batch of strong corporate earnings reports and grew hopeful that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened in the near term. Markets jumped in the prior session, with the S&P 500 closing above 7,700 for the first time and the Dow jumping more than 900 points for another record close.
AI and Tech Lead Rally
Stocks rose on Tuesday as oil prices dropped amid optimism that a U.S.-Iran deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be on the horizon. Information Technology was up by 4%, boosted by AI software company Palantir Technologies, which was surging 29% on the session. Palantir reported better-than-expected earnings after the bell on Monday, and Tuesday's rise was the stock's best day since February 2024.
Large-cap tech firms have driven market gains through strong quarterly results. The stock got a boost recently from the firm's robust second-quarter earnings, led by stronger-than-expected growth in its cloud computing business. The results reinforced investor confidence that its AI investments are translating into accelerating demand.
Broader Index Performance
The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 452 points, or 0.8%. The 30-stock index also scored a fresh all-time high. Also up on the session were the S&P 500 materials, industrials and financials sectors.
Geopolitical Relief
The three indexes are tracking for their best five-day performance since April 2025. The rally reflects both strong earnings surprises and reduced Middle East tensions as oil prices fell on hopes for regional de-escalation. The combination has reinforced investor appetite for equities despite earlier economic slowdown concerns.
