Rep. Ro Khanna Detained by Armed Israeli Settlers in West Bank, Raises Diplomatic Concerns

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna reported being detained by armed Israeli settlers during a West Bank visit, with the IDF backing the settlers rather than intervening on behalf of the American congressional delegation. The incident raises questions about Israeli security forces' treatment of US officials.

What Happened

Rep. Ro Khanna claims he was detained by armed Israeli settlers while visiting the West Bank, saying the IDF sided with the settlers over Americans. The congressman and other Americans in his delegation were held by the settlers for an extended period during their tour of Palestinian areas.

Khanna's Account

Khanna wrote on social media: "When the IDF arrived, they sided with the settlers & continued our detention. They made a huge mistake. You will be hearing more soon." The congressman's post suggests that Israeli military forces present at the scene chose to support the settlers rather than protect the American official and his delegation.

Administration Response

U.S. President Donald Trump's Deputy Assistant Sebastian Gorka became the first official from the Trump administration to comment on the detention, writing: "Walking with a slung carbine over your shoulder is now 'brandishing,'" in reference to Khanna's post where he said "Israeli settlers, brandishing American-made M4s, detained me & other Americans on my trip to Palestine." Gorka added: "Clearly this embarrassment to elected office has never been to Israel before where citizen-soldiers live like this every day."

Political Implications

Khanna's detention and Gorka's dismissive response underscore tensions within the Trump administration regarding relations with Israel and the treatment of American officials. Asked if he was running for president, Khanna said: "I'm strongly considering it, and I'm more resolved to consider it after this trip."

Precedent

Khanna previously visited Israel in October 2024 and February 2022. The incident appears unprecedented in its directness and the formal detention claim by a sitting congressman.
