Iran Launches Missile Strikes on Kuwait and Bahrain as US Conducts New Military Operations

Iran attacked Kuwait's airport and Bahrain with missiles on June 3, killing at least one person in Kuwait, while the U.S. conducted simultaneous strikes on Iranian targets. The escalations mark a critical test of ceasefire negotiations between the two nations.

Latest Escalation in US-Iran Conflict

Iran launched missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain, killing one person in Kuwait according to the country's foreign ministry, with the attacks coming as the U.S. conducted new strikes on Qeshm Island. Earlier, the U.S. military said it had struck an oil tanker headed for an Iranian port.

Market and Energy Concerns

The military operations are contributing to significant market volatility and energy sector concerns. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 3.2% to $96.73 a barrel, while Brent crude rose 2.9% to $98.80 a barrel. Tom Baker, a managing director at global commodities trader Vitol, told an energy conference on Tuesday that the market was underpricing some of the risks stemming from the Iran war, even as the conflict entered its third month.

Risk Premium in Oil Markets

Adding to the bullish sentiment was a warning from the International Energy Agency that global oil inventories could fall to critical levels ahead of the peak summer demand season if stock draws continue at their current pace, with the stalling in U.S.-Iran negotiations and IEA warnings of critically low global stock levels adding layers of risk premium to benchmark prices.

Geopolitical Context

The attacks represent a critical juncture in ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Iran announced a pause on peace talks with the United States, and alongside the Axis of Resistance, announced plans to "completely block" the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to close the Strait of Mandeb, ruling out any further talks until Israel ends its military operations in Lebanon and Gaza.
