Fed Holds Rates Steady Amid Persistent Inflation, Hints at Possible Hikes Ahead

Despite maintaining rates, the central bank's tone suggested growing impatience with stubborn price pressures that have plagued the economy for years.

Inflation Remains Above Target

The personal consumption expenditures index showed that core PCE, excluding food and energy prices, increased 0.1% monthly and 3.3% annually, remaining stubbornly above the Fed's 2% target. Inflation has already been higher than the Fed would like for more than five years now. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized the central bank's commitment to price stability, stating there is "no soft inflation target" and reiterating that "there is only a target, and it's 2%."
