Record-breaking heat is having an impact on one of the biggest celebrations for the United States' 250th birthday, with organizers of the Freedom 250 Salute to America are delaying the event's start time from 1pm to 5pm because of the expect triple-digit heat in Washington. Kathryn Follin, 30, of Great Falls, Virginia, said she saw "a number of people that passed out" at the fair earlier in the day due to the heat, noting that there isn't much shade inside.
Public Health Measures
Officials have been passing out water to visitors throughout the day. Several attendees told NBC News that was key because people are not allowed to bring their own water bottles inside under the event's security policy. Freedom 250 is offering complimentary water refills and misting stations scattered across the site as attendees battle high temps.
