Bioengineered Chewing Gum Cuts HPV Levels by Up to 93% in Oral Cancer Study
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania developed a specially engineered chewing gum that significantly reduces viruses and bacteria linked to head and neck cancer while preserving healthy mouth bacteria, offering a potentially affordable preventive therapy.
A Novel Approach to Head and Neck Cancer Prevention
A specially engineered chewing gum reduced HPV by up to 93% and nearly eliminated two bacteria linked to head and neck cancer, while the treatment preserved beneficial mouth bacteria, raising hopes for a safer and more affordable therapy. The research team was led by Henry Daniell of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
How the Gum Works
The researchers examined the levels of three microbes linked to cancer—human papilloma virus (HPV) and two species of bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn)—in oral samples from patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC). Tests showed that extracts from the bean gum lowered HPV levels by 93% in saliva samples, and HPV levels also fell by 80% in oral rinse samples. A single dose of antibacterial chewing gum containing protegrin-1 reduced Pg and Fn by more than 99% in saliva and oral-rinse samples.
Significance and Next Steps
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma represents a serious public health challenge with limited treatment options. The gum spared the mouth's healthy, beneficial bacteria, giving it a selectivity advantage over radiation therapy, which can disrupt the entire oral microbial community. This targeted approach contrasts sharply with conventional therapies that indiscriminately damage beneficial microbes.
Path to Clinical Use
All testing was done in a laboratory on patient samples, not in living people, and human clinical trials are the necessary next step before anyone can know whether the gum works as hoped. Their findings are published in Scientific Reports. If clinical trials confirm these results, the treatment could offer patients an accessible, low-cost option to complement existing cancer prevention and management strategies.
