Apple Cuts 200+ Jobs in Vision Pro and Siri Teams, Pivoting to Smart Glasses and AI

Apple has laid off more than 200 employees across its Vision Pro headset and Siri teams as it refocuses on developing lightweight AI-powered smart glasses and next-generation artificial intelligence features. The cuts mark a strategic shift away from VR gaming and immersive video content for Vision Pro.

Major Restructuring at Apple

Apple is cutting jobs across teams responsible for the Siri digital assistant and the Vision Pro headset, part of an effort to focus on new devices and artificial intelligence. The company has cut more than 200 jobs across teams working on Vision Pro, Siri, and software engineering.

Division of Layoffs

Around 100 of the job cuts come from the Vision Pro group, with Apple largely shutting down a Vision Pro team focused on gaming and scaling back the team working on producing Immersive Video for Vision Pro. Apple has also cut around 100 positions from its Siri and software teams, with the Siri reorganization related to the launch of Siri AI, which is built on a revamped technical architecture that changes the necessary expertise required for the Siri team.

Strategic Rationale

The realignment signals a major strategic pivot for the tech giant as it shifts its focus toward developing lightweight, AI-powered smart glasses and next-generation, generative artificial intelligence. Apple concluded that the steep financial investment required to produce high-end immersive video was no longer justifiable given the headset's limited audience, as Vision Pro struggled to achieve widespread consumer adoption, hindered by its premium $3,699 price tag and a cumbersome overall user experience.

Future Direction

Despite the cuts to the Vision Products Group, Vision Pro and visionOS operating system aren't being eliminated, and Apple continues to work on AI smart glasses — the rumored Apple Glasses — expected in 2027, but that device won't support 3D gaming or video. In a statement, an Apple spokesperson said the changes were made "to evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users."
