Trump Launches 'Project Freedom' to Escort Ships Through Strait of Hormuz
President Trump announced a military operation starting Monday to help ships pass through the blocked Strait of Hormuz, deploying 15,000 service members, guided-missile destroyers, and over 100 aircraft in an effort to restore global shipping and break the deadlock with Iran.
US Military Operation to Restore Shipping
US Central Command forces will begin supporting Trump's "Project Freedom" to "restore freedom of navigation" in the Strait of Hormuz, with the mission beginning Monday to "support merchant vessels seeking to freely transit through the essential international trade corridor," the military announced.
Military Assets Deployed
US military support for the effort will include guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, and 15,000 service members. CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said the support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy while maintaining the naval blockade.
Global Impact
The average price of a gallon of US regular gas is up nearly 50% since the start of the Iran war on February 28. Around 20,000 seafarers are stuck waiting to pass through, according to the International Chamber of Shipping.
Diplomatic Status
Trump said his representatives "are having very positive discussions" with Iran, with special envoy Steve Witkoff telling CNN "we're in conversation" about the state of discussions.
