Iran Seizes Two Container Ships in Strait of Hormuz During Trump Ceasefire Extension
Hours after President Trump extended the Iran ceasefire, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces seized two container vessels (MSC Francesca and Epaminondas) in the Strait of Hormuz. The White House said the seizures do not violate the ceasefire, though analysts suggest Iran is testing diplomatic limits.
Ceasefire Extension Details
President Trump announced Tuesday he is extending the ceasefire in the war with Iran "until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal," despite prior statements he would not move the deadline.
Iranian Ship Seizures
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy confirmed its interdiction and seizure of two vessels on Wednesday which it said were "attempting to secretly exit the Strait of Hormuz." The IRGC Navy named the two vessels as the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas.
The White House said the president doesn't view Iran's assertion that it seized two ships in the Strait of Hormuz as a violation of the ceasefire.
Ongoing Blockade
Trump said the US naval blockade on Iran would remain. Iran has insisted that the blockade represents a violation of the ceasefire, and has said it will not negotiate under the "shadow of threats" or while the blockade remains in place
Peace Talks Uncertain
An expected trip by Vice President JD Vance to Pakistan for a second round of talks with Iranian officials is being put on hold after negotiators from Tehran reportedly declined to participate.
