Mali Defence Minister Killed in Coordinated Jihadist-Separatist Attacks

Mali's Defence Minister General Sadio Camara was killed Sunday in a car bomb attack on his residence during widespread coordinated attacks on Saturday by Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists and Tuareg separatists. The assaults across the capital Bamako and northern cities represent one of the most significant coordinated offensives since 2012.

Attack Overview

Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed following attacks carried out by jihadist groups on Saturday, April 25, with his residence in Kati, located 15 kilometers northwest of Bamako, targeted in a suicide truck bombing. Camara, his second wife and two of his grandchildren died in the car bomb attack on his home.

Coordinated Offensive

An Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group said Saturday that its fighters had joined forces with Tuareg rebels to launch attacks against the army across junta-ruled Mali. The forces attacked the homes of junta leader General Assimi Goita and Defence Minister Camara, Bamako international airport and other targets. Gunfire was simultaneously reported in Gao, Sévaré, Kidal and Mopti.

Strategic Significance

The attacks targeted both the Malian army and the Africa Corps, the Russian military unit backing them, with analysts noting this represented "a major coordinated offensive across the country on a level unseen since 2012 when the government lost half the country." The al-Qaida-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen claimed they acted jointly with the Azawad Liberation Front, a prominent Tuareg-led separatist group.

Military Response

Mali's army said by 11am that the situation was under control but "sweeping operations" were ongoing. The junta chief's whereabouts were unknown, and there was intense speculation over Defence Minister Camara after residents said a powerful blast had destroyed most of his home.
