Israel Kills Hamas Military Leader Izz al-Din al-Haddad in Gaza Strike

Israel conducted an airstrike in Gaza that killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the leader of Hamas' military wing and one of the last surviving architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks. The strike also killed six others including his wife and daughter. Hamas has confirmed his death.

Strike Details

Israel carried out strikes on Gaza City killing Hamas' most senior military leader, Izz al-Din al-Haddad. The Israeli strikes on Friday killed at least seven people, with more than 50 others injured and taken to Al-Shifa Hospital.

Al-Haddad's Role

Izz al-Din al-Haddad was one of the senior Hamas military commanders who directed the planning and execution of the Hamas-led attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people in southern Israel and saw more than 250 taken hostage. He was one of the last surviving architects of the Oct. 7 attacks.

Context

The attack comes despite an ostensible ceasefire that has been in place since October. Israel has carried out regular strikes in Gaza that it says are targeting Hamas or what officials describe as imminent threats to Israeli forces occupying more than half of the destroyed enclave.

Confirmation

Hamas confirmed the killing of Izz al-Din al-Haddad in a statement on Saturday and condemned Israel's "treacherous and cowardly assassination".
