Israel-Hezbollah Fighting Escalates Despite Lebanon Ceasefire Agreement

Despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon in mid-April, Israeli forces and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia have resumed significant military clashes on May 10, including confirmed cross-border attacks. Lebanon's death toll from Israeli operations has risen to 2,795 people.

Ongoing Clashes

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for 26 attacks on Friday, including two on targets inside Israel for the first time since the ceasefire agreement, with the attack on a military base in Israel marking the first time the Iranian-backed militant group has publicly claimed responsibility for a cross-border strike since a delicate truce between Israel and Lebanon was ordered in mid-April, with Hezbollah saying it targeted an Israeli military base south of the city of Nahariya on Friday afternoon.

Israeli Operations in Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces said it continued to operate in southern Lebanon "to remove threats to Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers," striking weapons storage facilities and a position used by Hezbollah to launch drones toward Israeli soldiers, and also striking two loaded launchers in southern Lebanon, with one launcher having previously fired toward Israeli soldiers and the other having launched rockets toward Israel.

Casualty Count

Lebanon's Health Ministry said the death toll from Israeli airstrikes since March 2 had risen to 2,795. Israel's military and Hezbollah exchanged more strikes Saturday despite a ceasefire agreement that was intended to pave the way for peace talks, with the Israeli military saying explosive drones launched by Hezbollah had fallen within Israeli territory and one Israeli reservist soldier had been severely injured.
