Iran war cost likely $50 billion, far exceeding Pentagon's public estimate
U.S. officials told CBS News the true cost of the Iran war is roughly double the Pentagon's public estimate of $25 billion, with much of the gap from munitions replacement and infrastructure damage.
True Cost of Iran Conflict Emerges
The true price tag of the Iran war is closer to $50 billion, U.S. officials familiar with internal assessments told CBS News, roughly double the public estimate the Pentagon cited in congressional testimony this week. Much of the gap is accounted for by munitions that have been used and need to be replaced.
Pentagon's Public Position
Pentagon officials told lawmakers that the US had spent $25bn since the war began, but were unclear on whether that included damage to US assets in the Middle East.
Economic Fallout
The war keeps costing motorists more at the pump, with the average price of gas hitting $4.39 a gallon in the U.S. on Friday, according to AAA. That's up a steep nine cents from Thursday and 34 cents from a week ago and month ago, AAA said.
