Google Search's AI Overhaul Breaks on Simple Word 'Disregard'

Google's new AI-powered search interface, which the company unveiled as its biggest update in 25 years, encounters a critical bug when users search for certain action words like 'disregard.' The AI misinterprets these words as system commands rather than search queries, returning nonsensical responses and blank space instead of definitions.

The Bug

After Google Search's AI update, the word "disregard" now effectively breaks the search interface; earlier this week, Google rolled out a completely new Search experience, foregrounding AI summaries and kicking the traditional "10 blue links" far down the page. Google's all-new version of search semi-breaks when you search for the word "disregard"; typing "disregard" into Google Search results in Google's AI interpreting it as a system-style instruction instead of a search query.

What Users See

When users Google "disregard," the Google Search AI Overview result is "Understood. I have disregarded your previous prompt. How can I help you today?" The response is followed by a large blank space before the traditional list of blue links.

Broader Issue

Several action words, including "disregard," "ignore" and "dismiss" are causing a glitch when using Google Search. Google said "We're aware that AI Overviews are misinterpreting some action-related queries, and we're working on a fix, which will roll out soon."

Context

The company announced the most significant change to its search interface since the early 2000s; the traditional structure of Google Search—type a query, receive a list of ranked links—is being replaced by an AI-first experience; it is, by any measure, the most significant redesign of the most used website in human history in approximately 25 years.
