FBI Director Kash Patel Denies Drinking Allegations, Threatens Lawsuit
FBI Director Kash Patel is facing allegations of excessive drinking and erratic behavior from over two dozen current and former officials. Patel denies the claims detailed in a new Atlantic report and threatens to sue the publication for defamation.
Explosive Allegations Surface
FBI Director Kash Patel faces defamation lawsuit threats over an Atlantic article reporting he frequently drinks to excess, with current and former federal government officials telling The Atlantic they worry Patel's behavior puts the country in danger, especially as the U.S. wages war with Iran.
The Atlantic's story was based on interviews with more than two dozen people, including current and former FBI agents, who described Patel as "erratic, suspicious of others, and prone to jumping to conclusions before he has necessary evidence," calling his behavior "a national-security vulnerability" citing "conspicuous inebriation and unexplained absences".
Patel's Response
In a statement, the FBI told The Atlantic the reporting was "all false," with Patel adding, "I'll see you in court," while the White House vehemently defended Patel, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying he "remains a critical player on the Administration's law and order team".
Patel posted on social media: "Memo to the fake news – the only time I'll ever actually be concerned about the hit piece lies you write about me will be when you stop. Keep talking, it means I'm doing exactly what I should be doing".
Past Controversies
Patel has been at the center of controversies, including incorrectly stating a suspect was in custody when conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was shot dead, and declaring the FBI had thwarted a terrorist attack before charges were filed, allowing two suspects who plotted to blow up a gay bar to flee.
In February, Patel came under fire for traveling to the Milan-Cortina Olympics to watch the U.S. men's hockey team, with videos showing him chugging a beer, wearing a gold medal, and dancing with the team.
