Alphabet Invests Up to $40 Billion in AI Competitor Anthropic

Google's parent company Alphabet announced a major $40 billion investment in AI rival Anthropic, including a $10 billion upfront payment and access to compute resources, signaling intensifying competition in the AI race.

Major AI Investment

Google parent Alphabet plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, starting with a $10 billion cash investment at a $350 billion valuation. The company also signed an agreement which will avail them of 5 GW of TPU compute over five years, a significant expansion of its existing compute capacity.

The additional $30 billion in investment is contingent upon meeting performance targets which have not been detailed but will likely help facilitate expansion of Anthropic's compute capacity.
